Five Nigerians among African recruits have died in Russia-Ukraine war, highlighting exploitation of young men lured with false promises of work and education

Five Nigerians among approximately 36 young men recruited to fight in the Russia-Ukraine War have been confirmed killed, according to a February 2026 investigative report by All Eyes on Wagner.

The report, titled The Business of Despair: The Russian Army’s Recruiting of African Fighters, details how vulnerable young Africans were lured abroad with promises of employment and education, only to be coerced into military service.

The Nigerian victims are Abdoulaye Issaka Ismael, 27; Agbo Moses Omale, 43; Adamu Abdulai Ismail, 25; Mikael, 47; and Fajobi Taiwo Omoniyi, 50.

Using a database of 1,417 African recruits between 2023 and mid-2025, the report identifies Nigerians as part of a wider strategy in which foreign fighters are deployed as “cannon fodder” in high-risk operations.

It notes the average age of recruits is 31 and that many come from economically challenged backgrounds.

The investigation by the OSINT Accountability Project revealed recruitment networks involving travel agencies in both Africa and Russia.

Recruits were often contacted through social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, and TikTok, with images of luxury cars and cityscapes used to entice young men.

Target countries for recruitment include Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon, and Gambia. Advertised incentives reportedly include signing bonuses, monthly salaries of $2,000–$2,500, health insurance, and facilitated Russian citizenship after contract completion.

However, the report finds many promises unfulfilled, with fighters reporting unpaid wages, siphoned funds, or substantially lower compensation than promised.

The African death toll in the conflict has reportedly reached at least 316, with further casualties likely.

The findings underscore the ongoing exploitation of African recruits in foreign military operations and the human cost of the war.
