The fatal incident occurred at about 4.25 a.m. on 14 February inside Quilox Restaurant and Lounge, where Sheriff Shittu was attending a friend’s birthday celebration with his younger brother.

Local law enforcement sources say a disorderly individual, who had reportedly made inappropriate advances toward female guests including Shittu’s girlfriend, became involved in a dispute.

Police allege that as security personnel were escorting the suspect out of the venue, the man produced a firearm and opened fire, striking Sheriff Shittu.

Despite efforts to revive him, emergency responders later pronounced him dead at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center.

New York City police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who fled the scene and remains at large. Authorities have said investigations are ongoing, with surveillance footage and witness accounts being examined.

Family members and members of the Nigerian diaspora community have called for justice and raised concerns about venue security, questioning how a firearm was brought into the establishment.

Sheriff Shittu’s relatives described him as a creative and ambitious designer striving to establish his fashion brand in the United States.
