Lagos police ban covered plates and unregistered vehicles, enforcing stricter rules on tinted windscreens and road safety

The Lagos State Police Command has banned the use of covered vehicle number plates and unregistered cars across the state, warning that strict enforcement will begin immediately. Commissioner of Police Jimoh Olohundare issued the directive on 9 March 2026 during a briefing with journalists in Lagos.

Olohundare also cautioned motorists against using tinted windscreens that conceal the front and right-side windows, stressing that all vehicles must be properly registered immediately after purchase.

The commissioner said the enforcement would respect citizens’ rights while ensuring compliance.

“It is prohibited for anyone in Lagos to cover their plate number or to use tinted glasses where the front screen and the right screen are covered. People are also prohibited from using unregistered vehicles,” Olohundare said.

The announcement follows directives from Inspector-General of Police aimed at improving operational standards, discipline, and professionalism within the force.

The Lagos command began sensitising officers about the new measures less than 24 hours after receiving instructions, the commissioner noted.

Olohundare emphasised that effective supervision and community collaboration are central to the initiative. He called on officers to work closely with residents to identify security concerns and tailor policing strategies accordingly.

“Community priorities must guide policing strategies,” he said, adding that misconduct or violations of citizens’ rights would not be tolerated.

Officers must uphold professionalism and ensure comprehensive security coverage during all public operations.

The police chief further revealed that commands nationwide have been instructed to intensify officer training, particularly in crime prevention and security management during large gatherings and special assignments.
