Rivers United, previously in strong contention for the league, struggled to penetrate Ikorodu’s organised defence before the interval.

The decisive moment came in the 52nd minute when substitute Folarin Temitope capitalised on a rebound from goalkeeper Rashid Owolabi to slot home after Salami Farouk’s initial effort, securing all three points for the home team.

Temitope’s immediate impact proved crucial, while Ikorodu made further tactical adjustments in the second half, bringing on Chinedu Akuvuo for his debut and reorganising midfield and attack to preserve the lead.

Rivers responded with substitutions including Iyowuna Douglas and Timothy Zachariah but could not find an equaliser despite sustained pressure.

The win boosts Ikorodu to 48 points, moving them into third place and overtaking Nasarawa United FC and Shooting Stars FC, both on 47 points, as the club pushes for continental qualification.

Rivers United remain top on 51 points, but the gap has narrowed, with Enugu Rangers FC also on 51 points and unbeaten in their last seven matches.
