Nigeria’s U-17 side steps up preparations for WAFU B Championship ahead of November qualifiers

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have confirmed participation in an invitational tournament in China next week as part of intensified preparations for the upcoming WAFU B U-17 Championship scheduled for November in Burkina Faso.

The development marks a key step in the team’s build-up as the former world champions continue their transition programme under head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere, who has been overseeing training sessions in Abuja since last week.

The squad, which is largely composed of players selected through the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) U-15 programme held last year, is expected to undergo further assessment during the China tournament before final selection decisions are made.

Team officials say the international exposure is designed to test the players’ tactical discipline, physical readiness and adaptability ahead of continental competition.

The WAFU B U-17 Championship will serve as the qualifying pathway for the 2027 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, making the upcoming preparatory matches a critical phase in Nigeria’s youth football development cycle.

Coaching staff are expected to reduce the squad size after the China invitational, as performance levels and consistency will determine final selection for the regional tournament.

Nigeria’s youth teams have historically used international invitational competitions to fine-tune squads before major qualifiers, with officials viewing such exposure as essential to bridging the gap between domestic development programmes and elite international competition.

The current group features a blend of emerging talents identified through structured scouting under the FIFA-supported development framework, which aims to strengthen grassroots football pathways across the country.

With preparations now shifting to an international stage, the technical crew will be closely monitoring player performance as Nigeria seeks to reassert its dominance in West African youth football.
