Don Jazzy says not every artist he signs will achieve global fame, stressing that personal growth and progress also count as success

Nigerian music executive Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has said signing with a record label does not guarantee that an artist will achieve global fame, explaining that progress and development are also important measures of success in the music industry.

The Mavin Records boss made the remarks during a recent livestream with popular forex trader Habby Forex, where he discussed the risks associated with the music business and compared them with the uncertainties of financial trading.

Don Jazzy explained that although music remains his primary focus, the industry involves risks, and not every artist signed to his label will become an international star or generate substantial financial returns for the company.

“The forex market is just something I do for fun. Music still takes most of my time, and my other businesses are not as volatile and risky as the forex market. But not every artist I signed will become global,” he said.

He added that the music business, like trading, involves uncertainty, making it unrealistic to expect every investment in an artist to produce the same level of success.

The music executive said he considers an artist’s improvement after joining his label a meaningful achievement, even if the musician does not attain international recognition.

According to him, success should not be measured solely by global popularity or the amount of money an artist generates for a record label.

“But to us, as long as you are better today than yesterday as an artist, you are a success,” he said.

His comments highlight the importance of artistic development in an industry where commercial performance and international recognition often attract considerable attention.

For emerging musicians, growth can involve improving their sound, developing their performance skills, building an audience and gaining experience, even before they achieve mainstream success.

Don Jazzy has played significant roles in the careers of several Nigerian musicians who have achieved national and international recognition.

Artists associated with his music career and label ventures include D’banj, Tiwa Savage, Rema and Ayra Starr.

Through Mavin Records, he has continued to work with emerging and established performers, contributing to the development of Nigeria’s contemporary music industry.

His latest remarks offer insight into the expectations surrounding artist development and the uncertainties record labels face when investing in new talent.
