Musk raised the concern while discussing demographic trends and the falling number of people having children, saying the decline had become a worrying pattern across many countries.

In remarks contained in a video circulating online, Musk said the United States had remained below the replacement level for decades and claimed that the country recorded its lowest birth rate on record in the previous year.

“It is concerning that the birth rate in the United States has been below the replacement rate since I was born around 1971, thereabouts,” Musk said.

“I think last year was the lowest birth rate on record. It was very low.”

The billionaire said the trend was not limited to the United States, arguing that birth rates were falling in countries around the world.

“It seems like a trend in every country on earth. It is worrying, and if something doesn’t happen, humanity is going to disappear,” he said.

Musk has repeatedly raised concerns about declining fertility and population ageing, describing low birth rates as a long-term risk to human civilisation. Similar comments have featured in his public remarks in recent years.

He has also argued that populations can shrink substantially over successive generations when fertility remains below replacement level.

Musk said having children was important to maintaining future generations, stressing that the continuation of humanity ultimately depends on there being new generations.

“I think it is very important to have kids; no humans, no humanity,” he said.

The comments reflect Musk’s longstanding advocacy for higher birth rates. In previous discussions, he has urged governments and individuals to consider measures that make it easier for people to have and raise children.

His remarks come amid wider discussions about falling fertility rates in several countries, where population ageing and declining numbers of births have become significant demographic concerns.

While Musk’s warning focuses on the long-term consequences of sustained low fertility, the pace and eventual impact of population decline vary considerably between countries and depend on factors including migration, mortality and future fertility trends.
