Yusuf Gagdi opposes state police, citing misuse risks, but supports community policing with local vigilantes to improve security in Plateau State

Yusuf Gagdi state police stance remains firm as the Plateau State lawmaker reiterated his opposition to the creation of state police while endorsing community policing initiatives.

The representative of Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency spoke to constituents in Kanam following renewed bandit attacks, warning that governors could misuse state police against political opponents rather than maintaining public safety.

“My position, even on the House floor, is that governors will misuse state police, particularly against political opponents, not to maintain peace and order,” Gagdi said.

“Nigeria is not ripe for proliferation of security agencies. Rather, I support strengthening existing security agencies—fund the police, military, Department of State Services, and ensure accountability.”

Gagdi expanded on his concerns in a national television appearance, highlighting that governors often dominate state elections and could potentially weaponise police operatives to suppress opposition.

He questioned, “If they cannot handle a state independent electoral commission fairly, how will you trust them with the power to control AK-47s at the state level?”

However, Gagdi emphasised his support for community policing, advocating for local youths trained and equipped to protect their own communities.

He believes such vigilante groups are more accountable and effective than state-controlled police forces.

The lawmaker has a history of supporting vigilante initiatives, including a recent donation of N30 million to local security groups within his constituency.

Despite these efforts, insecurity remains a challenge in the Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam zone.
