Xabi Alonso hints at a Chelsea defensive clear-out after Maxence Lacroix’s arrival, with several centre-backs expected to leave this summer

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has signalled that the club is preparing for a significant reshuffle in defence after revealing he wants only four or five centre-backs in his squad for the 2026/27 season.

Alonso made the comments during his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s pre-season clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, as the Blues continue to streamline their squad before the new campaign.

His remarks came shortly after Chelsea completed the signing of French defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal reported to be worth around £51 million, increasing the club’s central defensive options to 10.

With the squad now overloaded in central defence, several players are expected to depart before the summer transfer window closes.

According to Sky Sports, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, and Axel Disasi are among the defenders likely to leave Stamford Bridge as Alonso reshapes his squad.

Chelsea’s current list of centre-backs includes Josh Acheampong, Aaron Anselmino, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix, Mamadou Sarr, and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Alonso’s preference for a smaller defensive unit suggests increased competition for places, with only a handful of players expected to remain as first-team options.

The Spaniard, who took charge of Chelsea ahead of the 2026/27 season, has already begun reshaping the squad to fit his tactical philosophy.

Reducing the number of central defenders is expected to create room for further arrivals while allowing fringe players to secure regular playing time elsewhere.

Chelsea have been among the Premier League’s busiest clubs in recent transfer windows, regularly balancing high-profile signings with player sales to comply with financial regulations and maintain squad harmony.
