VP Kashim Shettima returns to Abuja after representing President Tinubu at the 39th AU summit, advocating sustainable water, sanitation, and health security in Africa

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government.

The summit, held between Saturday and Sunday, was themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063”.

Discussions focused on advancing continental commitments toward sustainable water management, improved sanitation, and broader development aspirations under the AU’s Agenda 2063 framework.

During the summit, Vice-President Shettima participated in high-level side events and bilateral engagements with political and business leaders, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnerships across Africa.

Shettima also called for a continental shift towards health security sovereignty, urging African nations to move from reliance on foreign aid toward self-sufficient, homegrown health systems.

The AU summit offered a platform for Heads of State and delegates to consolidate commitments on water and sanitation infrastructure, public health, and sustainable development, while highlighting Nigeria’s leadership role in continental cooperation.
