Victor Osimhen injury confirmed as ankle ligament sprain after Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier, Galatasaray begins treatment

Victor Osimhen injury concerns have deepened following his early substitution during Nigeria’s 1–0 win over Rwanda in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Saturday.

The striker, who plays for Turkish giants Galatasaray, was forced off midway through the first half in Uyo after a heavy challenge from Rwanda’s Claude Niyomugabo. Initial diagnosis by the Super Eagles’ medical team indicated a shin bruise, but follow-up assessments have revealed a more serious condition.

After returning to Turkey on Sunday, Galatasaray’s medical staff conducted further examinations.

Team doctor Dr. Yener Slim confirmed on Tuesday that the club’s €75 million summer signing had suffered a moderate ankle ligament sprain, with tension and internal bleeding.

“In the examinations conducted today on Victor Osimhen, a moderate level of sprain (tension and bleeding) was detected in the ankle ligaments. The necessary treatment has started to ensure his quick return,” Dr. Slim stated on the club’s official website.

The news is a significant blow to both Nigeria and Galatasaray, as the striker will now miss upcoming matches, including the Super Eagles’ crucial clash against South Africa on Tuesday in Bloemfontein.

Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe confirmed that Osimhen woke up with discomfort on Sunday morning and would not travel with the squad to South Africa.

“Team doctor confirmed Victor Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his shin. He woke up this morning with discomfort and will not be travelling with the squad,” Efoghe said.

In Osimhen’s absence, Nigeria fielded Cyriel Dessers and later Tolu Arokodare, who scored the winning goal in the 51st minute to keep the Super Eagles’ qualification hopes alive.

While the full extent of the sprain is still being monitored, it remains unclear whether Osimhen will be fit to feature in Galatasaray’s league fixture against Eyüpspor on Saturday.

His return will depend on the success of the ongoing rehabilitation process.

Osimhen has had an impressive start to life in Turkey, scoring two goals in three league appearances, helping Galatasaray climb to the top of the table with 12 points.
