Peter Obi raises alarm over UTME registration hardship in Anambra, urging JAMB to ease access for students before February 26 deadline

Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, has expressed concern over difficulties students face registering for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination at the Amawbia office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in Awka South, Anambra State.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, Obi said the challenges mirrored problems observed last year after several Computer-Based Test centres were proscribed over alleged infractions.

“Last year, concerns were raised about the hardship students faced at various centres across the country, particularly at the Amawbia, Anambra State, office of JAMB, following the proscription of several CBT centres,” he said.

“The expectation was that corrective measures would follow. Sadly, as I passed there again last Friday, I met the same crowd and confusion.”

Obi called for a balanced approach to avoid penalising candidates for systemic issues.

He suggested that centres under investigation could operate with limited services or that previously approved centres could temporarily reopen under supervision.

“With registration ending on the 26th, the consequences are serious. Many candidates travel from distant villages, some even sleeping in Awka to secure access. If nothing urgent is done, some will miss the examination — not for lack of preparation, but because the system failed them,” he warned.

Obi’s statement comes amid reports of registration challenges nationwide for the 2026 UTME, despite JAMB announcing that over a million candidates have already completed their registration.
