President Bola Tinubu meets National Assembly leaders in Abuja to strengthen cooperation amid tensions and ahead of the 2027 elections

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as both arms of government seek stronger coordination ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Those present at the meeting included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma. The engagement took place shortly after plenary sessions in both chambers of the National Assembly.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the Tinubu National Assembly meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the executive and legislative branches to maintain stability in governance and reinforce democratic institutions.

A federal lawmaker who spoke on condition of anonymity said the President expressed concern about recent tensions between the two arms of government, particularly disagreements that had surfaced during plenary sessions in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The disputes reportedly involved issues around budget implementation and debates on constitutional amendments currently under consideration.

“Preparations for 2027 are expected to begin soon. The President reminded the leadership of the National Assembly of the need to put their houses in order,” the source said.

The lawmaker added that recent rowdy exchanges in the chambers had created an impression of disunity within government that needed to be addressed.

Political analysts note that disagreements between the executive and legislature are common in democratic systems, but the recent disputes have raised concerns about their potential impact on governance and legislative productivity.

However, the House of Representatives dismissed suggestions that the meeting was convened because of internal tensions. The House spokesman, Akin Rotimi, described the engagement as routine consultation between the Presidency and parliamentary leadership.

“It is routine for the leadership of the National Assembly to meet with President Bola Tinubu to confer on matters of national importance and strengthen coordination between the executive and legislative arms of government,” Rotimi said.

He added that such meetings provide opportunities to discuss legislative priorities, policy implementation, and broader national issues.

Regular consultations between the Presidency and National Assembly leadership have become a recurring feature of the current administration as it seeks legislative backing for key reforms and policy initiatives.
