Nigeria’s forest security initiative earns praise from Rep. Fatoba, who says it will revive farming, enhance food security, and improve national safety

Nigeria forest security initiative introduced by President Bola Tinubu has been commended by Hon. Olusola Fatoba, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti on Monday, Fatoba described the initiative as a bold and strategic intervention that will not only enhance national security but also revive agricultural productivity, especially in rural areas long affected by insecurity.

The initiative includes the deployment of forest guards— a specialised security force tasked with rooting out bandits, kidnappers, and criminal herders who have turned Nigeria’s forests into dangerous hideouts.

Fatoba, who represents Ekiti Central Constituency II, urged all state governors to embrace and implement the programme, describing it as a “timely response to a crisis that has crippled food production and deterred local and foreign agricultural investment.”

“This initiative is a clear signal that Nigeria is serious about taking back its forests from criminals. It will encourage farmers to return to their lands, and ultimately stabilise food security,” he said.

He added that the Nigeria forest security initiative would empower farmers, stimulate the rural economy, and foster an environment conducive to investment and sustainable growth.

The lawmaker also praised President Tinubu for his swift response to rising insecurity, particularly in agrarian communities, saying the move restores renewed hope in the agricultural sector.

“We must give maximum support to this forest security outfit if we are to end the scourge of rural insecurity once and for all,” he added.

In a related statement, Presidential Spokesman Sunday Dare reiterated that the Tinubu administration will not cede “an inch” of Nigeria’s territory to criminal gangs.

He said the forest guards will be well-trained and armed to eliminate threats and secure the nation’s green belts.

Fatoba concluded by affirming that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader goals of economic diversification, improved food systems, and national resilience.
