President Bola Tinubu presides over emergency FEC meeting to approve 2026 budget before presentation to National Assembly

President Bola Tinubu presided over an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council at the State House, Abuja, on Friday, December 19, 2025, to finalise the 2026 Appropriation Bill ahead of its presentation to a joint session of the National Assembly.

Vice President Kashim Shettima stated that the session was convened to “put the stamp of approval” on the budget estimates before they are laid before lawmakers.

The emergency meeting followed the formal notification sent by the President to the National Assembly regarding the presentation scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday.

The FEC meeting comes after the December 3 session, during which key parameters of the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper were reviewed and approved. A conservative production estimate of 1.8 million barrels per day was adopted for budgetary planning purposes.

Among those present were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Head of the Civil Service, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; and National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
