TikTok fraudster sentenced in Abuja after impersonating Crystal and defrauding a victim of \$500. Court hands six months jail or N200,000 fine

TikTok fraudster sentenced A Federal High Court in Abuja has handed six months’ imprisonment to Oluyide Mide, who was convicted for impersonation and fraud on the social media platform TikTok.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling after Mide pleaded guilty to a one-count charge. The court found that Mide impersonated a TikTok user named Crystal and fraudulently obtained \$500 from a victim through Opay Digital Services Ltd.

The prosecution counsel, Maryam Ahmed, told the court that the offence occurred in 2025 in Abuja and violated Section 22 (2)(b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015. She urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.

In defense, Mide’s lawyer, Osemeha, pleaded for leniency, stressing that his client was a first-time offender who showed remorse. He appealed to the judge to temper justice with mercy.

Justice Nwite eventually convicted Mide and sentenced him to six months in prison with the option of paying a fine of N200,000.
