Taiwo Ekerin death case takes a new turn as a second Nigerian suspect is remanded in custody over the fatal assault in London

A United Kingdom court has remanded a Nigerian national, Chibueze Chukwurah, in custody after he was charged in connection with the death of fellow Nigerian Taiwo Ekerin following an alleged assault in Lewisham, south-east London.

The development was confirmed on Tuesday by the Metropolitan Police Service, which disclosed that Chukwurah was arrested on June 5 on suspicion of murder.

According to the police, the 34-year-old, whose address was given as Royston Road, Glasgow, was formally charged on June 7 and appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 8.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Old Bailey on June 10.

“A second man has been charged with murder after an assault in Lewisham,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Police officers were initially called to Lewisham High Street at about 4:40 a.m. on May 24 following reports of an altercation.

Ekerin sustained serious injuries during the incident and later died in hospital on May 30.

The latest charge comes after authorities previously announced that another suspect, Maxwell Oguanaya, aged 32, had also been remanded in custody in connection with the case.

The death has generated significant attention within the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom, with relatives describing the incident as a devastating loss.

Taiwo’s twin brother, Kehinde Ekerin, said the deceased died following what the family described as an unprovoked attack during a night out.

In a public fundraising appeal to support funeral arrangements, the family paid tribute to Ekerin as a devoted father, brother, son and friend whose death has left a profound void in the lives of those close to him.

According to the appeal, Ekerin was particularly devoted to his daughter and was widely known for his warmth, generosity, humour and kindness.

The family said they were struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, describing his death as a heartbreaking loss.

The Metropolitan Police investigation remains ongoing, and detectives have not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

Both suspects remain before the courts as criminal proceedings continue.
