Super Eagles FIFA ranking update sees Nigeria remain 26th globally but fall to fourth place in Africa after the latest release

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have retained their 26th position in the latest FIFA world rankings released on Monday, but dropped to fourth place among African teams.

The latest standings placed Nigeria behind Morocco, Senegal and Egypt on the continent, following changes influenced by performances during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles, coached by Eric Chelle, have not played a competitive fixture since their international friendly defeat to Portugal in June. Nigeria lost 2-1 to the former European champions in that encounter.

Egypt moved ahead of Nigeria after an impressive World Cup campaign that saw the Pharaohs reach the round of 16 before losing 3-2 to eventual finalists Argentina.

Morocco maintained their position as Africa’s top-ranked team after reaching the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The Atlas Lions also improved globally, climbing from seventh to sixth position in the overall FIFA rankings.

Senegal remained Africa’s second-best team despite dropping three places in the global rankings, while Algeria fell one place to become the continent’s fifth-ranked side.

At the global level, newly crowned world champions Spain returned to the top of the FIFA rankings following their 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.

Argentina, who finished runners-up, moved down to second place, while France, England and Brazil completed the top five teams worldwide.

Nigeria’s latest position highlights the need for a strong run of results ahead of upcoming international fixtures as the team continues preparations for future competitions.
