Success Olanrewaju family dispute erupts as widow alleges withheld funds while his relatives challenge her status and claims on assets

A bitter dispute has emerged between the widow of late Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju and his family over donations, assets, and his estate following his death in Ghana last year.

Allegations and counterclaims have intensified tensions, leaving the boxer’s two young children caught in the middle.

Adebusola, Olanrewaju’s partner, alleged that funds paid by the Ghana Boxing Authority were withheld by the late boxer’s relatives.

She claimed that out of $3,000 paid after the fatal fight, $1,000 went to the family, while the remaining $2,000 intended for her children was locked until they turn 18.

“All the money the NBBofC helped me recover from the GBA, Segun’s family took everything,” Adebusola said. “We didn’t get anything that would help us with our basic needs, and my parents have been the ones helping me.”

She also accused the family of selling Olanrewaju’s commercial bus without sharing proceeds.

The boxer’s family, however, rejected her claims. His mother, Mrs Agnes Olanrewaju, accused Adebusola of cursing her husband before the fatal trip to Ghana, asserting that she refused to accept the $3,000, calling it “nothing they can do [that] can become my son.”

Olanrewaju’s sister, Anuoluwapo Olanrewaju, challenged Adebusola’s claim as a legal spouse, stating no traditional or civil marriage took place. She described Adebusola as a “baby mama” rather than a wife and questioned her entitlement to family assets, including the bus.

Anuoluwapo also criticised Adebusola for allegedly showing a lack of affection while Olanrewaju was alive, citing tattoos the widow got after his death. She maintained that the family treated her with respect but felt Adebusola misrepresented their conduct publicly.

Adebusola confirmed that she and Olanrewaju were not legally married but claimed they lived together as a family and intended to formalise their marriage after her education.

She said the family’s treatment has included threats and insults towards her and her children, who remain financially constrained due to restricted access to donated funds.

Olanrewaju collapsed in the ring during a fight against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu on March 29, 2025, at the Trust Sports Emporium Boxing Arena in Accra and was pronounced dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

His remains were repatriated to Nigeria 81 days later and interred at Atan Cemetery, Ogun State.

The dispute over Success Olanrewaju’s estate continues to cast uncertainty over the welfare of his children, three-year-old Irenitemi Success and two-year-old Oluwatobiloba, as both sides assert conflicting claims over his assets and legacy.
