Stanley Nwabali Africa’s best claim grows after the Super Eagles goalkeeper inspires Chippa United to pre-season tournament success

Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has received high praise from Chippa United head coach Brandon Truter, who described the Super Eagles shot-stopper as one of Africa’s finest after his match-winning performance helped the South African club secure the Eastern Cape Pre-Season Tournament title.

Chippa United defeated Highbury FC 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Mthatha Stadium on Sunday, with Nwabali producing a crucial save during the shootout before his teammates converted all four of their spot-kicks to claim the trophy.

The decisive moment reinforced Truter’s confidence in his goalkeeper’s ability to deliver under pressure.

The coach said he always believed Chippa United had an advantage once the final moved into a penalty contest because of Nwabali’s quality.

“With Stanley Nwabali in goal, one of Africa’s best, I knew he’d make a save to help us win,” Truter told The Herald.

The tournament victory marked an encouraging return for Nwabali, who recently rejoined Chippa United after a five-month absence from the club.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper had already made an immediate impact by keeping a clean sheet in the semi-final, where Chippa defeated Ravens FC 1-0.

Although Highbury FC found a way past him in the final, Nwabali’s commanding display and penalty-saving heroics proved decisive as Chippa lifted the pre-season trophy ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.

Truter also praised the wider team effort, highlighting the resilience shown by his players throughout the tournament after overcoming Ravens FC in the semi-final and Highbury FC in the final.

The recognition adds to Nwabali’s growing reputation since his breakthrough performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles reached the final.

His composure, shot-stopping ability and leadership have helped establish him as one of the continent’s most respected goalkeepers.

The goalkeeper’s performances have also attracted attention beyond South Africa, with clubs monitoring his progress during previous transfer windows.
