Veteran musician Seyi Sodimu says Davido’s influence extends beyond music and could help him win a governorship election, unlike Burna Boy

Veteran Nigerian musician Seyi Sodimu has stirred debate online after claiming that Afrobeats star Davido has the influence to win a governorship election if he decides to venture into politics.

Sodimu made the statement while speaking on the What I Know podcast hosted by Korty EO, alongside Nollywood actress Shaffy Bello.

He compared the societal impact of Afrobeats stars Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy, arguing that their influence differs significantly beyond music.

According to the Love Me Jeje crooner, although the trio are often grouped together as the “Afrobeats Big 3,” each commands a different kind of connection with fans.

He described Wizkid as having a unique appeal, Burna Boy as a dominant stage performer, and Davido as an artist whose reach goes far beyond entertainment.

Sodimu said Davido’s popularity cuts across social and demographic lines in a way that could easily translate into political success.

“The Afrobeats Big 3, each one is doing music for different reasons. Burna Boy has conquered the stage and he is good. Wizkid is special. And Davido surpasses music,” he said.

“What do I mean by that? If Davido ran for governor today, he would win. But I don’t think Burna Boy could win as a governor.”

His comments quickly gained traction online, sparking mixed reactions from Nigerians.

While some agreed that Davido’s influence and connections could help him succeed politically, others questioned the practicality of such a move and argued that musical fame does not necessarily translate into electoral victory.

Speculation about Davido’s political future is not new. In 2025, former lawmaker Ben Murray-Bruce suggested the singer could one day become governor of Osun State.

Davido’s uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke, currently serves as the state’s governor, further fuelling political conversations around the singer.

Davido has also shown interest in political matters, openly supporting campaigns and mobilising young Nigerians during elections.

His involvement in political discourse has often set him apart from some of his peers in the music industry.
