Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has warned that Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has placed himself in a vulnerable position after making remarks widely interpreted as criticism of the club’s ownership.

Rooney reacted to Maresca’s comments describing the build-up to Chelsea’s Premier League win over Everton as the “worst 48 hours” since his arrival at Stamford Bridge in June 2024.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sounds, Rooney said the Italian coach’s words were deliberate and clearly aimed at those running the club.

He said Chelsea’s hierarchy would understand the message and warned that such public criticism often leaves managers exposed if results begin to decline.

Chelsea currently sit fourth in the Premier League, but Rooney said recent inconsistency had heightened scrutiny around Maresca’s position.

He contrasted the situation with Manchester United, where head coach Ruben Amorim previously received strong public backing from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Rooney suggested Maresca’s comments may have stemmed from internal disagreements or concerns about job security, despite recent results and trophies.

He described the timing and tone of the remarks as unusual, adding that Maresca did not appear to be a coach inclined to retreat from his stance.

Rooney said the Chelsea coach’s passion and drive were evident but warned that public criticism of ownership rarely attracts protection from club executives.

He added that Maresca’s decision to speak out could count against him if Chelsea suffer further setbacks in the league.

Maresca had earlier told reporters that the 48-hour period before Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton was the most difficult since he took charge, a comment that has since fuelled speculation about tensions behind the scenes.
