PSG French Champions Trophy victory over Marseille in Kuwait secured on penalties as Lucas Chevalier saves two spot-kicks after 2-2 draw

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Marseille on penalties to claim the French Champions Trophy in Kuwait on Thursday, extending their record to 14 wins in the competition.

PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier emerged as the hero, saving two penalties to secure a 4-1 shootout victory after a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Desire Doue converted the decisive spot-kick following Chevalier’s saves from Marseille’s Matt O’Riley and Hamed Traore.

Ousmane Dembele gave PSG an early lead, lifting the ball over Marseille’s goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

Rulli responded with key saves, denying Nuno Mendes and Emerson, while Chevalier kept out a header from Igor Paixao to maintain parity.

The match turned in Marseille’s favour late when Chevalier’s foul led to a penalty, converted by Mason Greenwood.

PSG looked set to miss out until Goncalo Ramos equalised in the fifth minute of injury time, sending the contest to penalties.

The fixture, traditionally between Ligue 1 champions and French Cup winners, has been staged internationally in recent years to promote French football abroad.

Previous editions have taken place in Canada, China, Gabon, Israel, Qatar, the USA, Morocco, and Austria.

Despite fan dissatisfaction over travel and engagement, PSG and Marseille will return to domestic action next week.

PSG, second in Ligue 1 and trailing Lens by one point, host Lille, while Marseille, third and seven points behind PSG, travel to Angers.

In Europe, PSG aim to secure automatic qualification to the Champions League last 16.

Marseille qualified for the Champions Trophy as league runners-up in 2024/25, finishing 19 points behind PSG.
