At least 10 people died in a road crash along Jos–Bauchi Road, Plateau State. FRSC cites speed and reckless driving as likely causes.

At least 10 people were killed in a road crash along the Jos–Bauchi Road in Plateau State in the early hours of Tuesday.

The accident, which occurred around 12:12 a.m., involved four vehicles: two trailers and two Ford Galaxy minibuses.

Eyewitnesses reported that 10 people died instantly, while several others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau State confirmed the incident.

Peter Longsan, the FRSC Public Education Officer, said all 10 victims were adult men.

In a statement, the FRSC explained that the crash occurred after a military checkpoint on the outskirts of Jos. A total of 19 people were involved—17 males and two females.

Injured victims were evacuated to General Hospital, Miango, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), and Plateau State Specialist Hospital.

Eight of the deceased were taken to Plateau Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital morgues, while two were claimed by the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for burial.

The rescue operation involved the FRSC, Nigerian Police, Nigerian Military officers, and local villagers.

Preliminary investigations indicate that speed and reckless driving, leading to loss of control, were major factors in the crash.

Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji urged motorists to avoid night journeys, excessive speeding, driving under the influence, and driving while fatigued or unwell.

He also encouraged the public to report road emergencies via the FRSC toll-free number 122.

The crash is the second major road accident in Plateau State within two weeks.
