Delta Govt condemns Ozoro Festival assault allegations, describing reported harassment as barbaric and urging police to investigate and prosecute offenders

The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the government was deeply disturbed by viral reports and videos circulating on social media showing women allegedly being harassed during the cultural event.

Aniagwu stressed that no cultural celebration could justify criminal behaviour or the violation of women’s dignity, warning that such acts had no place in Delta State or any civilised society.

He called on security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, to launch a swift and thorough investigation into the incidents, identify those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted without delay.

The Ozoro Festival assault allegations have sparked widespread outrage online, with some social media users describing the event as a “rape festival tradition,” while others have disputed the claims and argued that the incidents do not reflect the values of the Ozoro community.

Aniagwu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting women’s rights, stating that cultural festivals must never be used as a cover for criminal acts or any form of abuse.

He added that the government would not tolerate any behaviour that undermines public safety or the dignity of citizens, particularly women.
