Otti backs Tinubu re-election bid, saying he has no reason to oppose as he seeks second term and urges political cooperation

Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, on Friday said he would not oppose Bola Ahmed Tinubu if the President seeks re-election in 2027, stressing that he has no basis to challenge a second-term bid.

Speaking during his monthly media chat, Mr Otti stated that he is not in the presidential race and therefore sees no justification for opposing the incumbent.

“I am not in a position to oppose the candidacy of the President. I am not running for President,” he said.

The governor added that fairness and consistency informed his position, noting that he is also seeking a second term in office. “Why would I oppose his presidency? I am also seeking a second term.

Would it be right for me to say someone else should not have theirs?” he queried.

Mr Otti dismissed attempts to interpret his stance through partisan lenses, emphasising that governance requires cooperation across federal, state, and local levels.

He acknowledged that disagreements may arise but maintained that decisions taken within the democratic framework must be respected.

The measured stance comes amid growing political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with alliances and alignments gradually taking shape across party lines.

The Otti backs Tinubu re-election position signals a pragmatic approach to intergovernmental relations.

He also cautioned against politically driven narratives aimed at creating tension, arguing that such claims often lack substance when scrutinised.

On his political future, Mr Otti reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party Nigeria, stating that internal disputes had been resolved following a Supreme Court decision recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“The party is back on its feet,” he said, adding that preparations for congresses and a national convention are underway.
