DLA criticises Governor Ademola Adeleke after Osun ranked 32nd in BudgIT’s 2026 State of States fiscal performance assessment

In a statement issued by its state chairman, Dr Tosin Odeyemi, the party described Osun’s position as disappointing and accused the government of failing to convert public revenue into stronger economic growth and sustainable development.

BudgIT’s 11th State of States Report assessed the 2025 fiscal performance of 35 Nigerian states, examining revenue generation, fiscal viability, debt sustainability and spending in critical sectors, including health, education, agriculture and water, sanitation and hygiene. Rivers State was excluded from the assessment.

Lagos topped the ranking, followed by Enugu and Bayelsa, while Cross River placed last. Osun was ranked 32nd, ahead of Kogi, Plateau and Cross River.

Odeyemi said the result reflected what the party considered a lack of economic direction under Adeleke’s administration.

“This ranking is not surprising to us. It only confirms what we have been saying: that Governor Ademola Adeleke has no economic blueprint for Osun,” he said.

The DLA chairman also questioned the state’s ability to translate federal allocations and public spending into measurable economic benefits.

“How can a state that claims to be spending billions on paper be ranked among the worst in fiscal performance? It shows the government is only good at propaganda while the state’s economy is in shambles,” Odeyemi said.

The party contrasted Osun’s position with the performance of states such as Kebbi, Jigawa and Katsina, which it said had managed their resources more effectively.

The DLA called on the state government to prioritise economic revitalisation, reduce financial leakages and invest in productive sectors rather than what it described as frivolous spending.

It also urged residents to demand greater accountability over the management of public resources, saying the ranking should serve as a warning to the administration.

BudgIT’s assessment places emphasis not only on how much revenue states receive, but also on how effectively they manage expenditure, sustain their finances and direct spending towards development priorities.

The DLA’s remarks represent the party’s political assessment of the ranking. BudgIT’s report provides the fiscal performance evaluation, while the party’s claims about the Adeleke administration’s economic planning and governance remain its own criticism.
