Osimhen Champions League warning: Nigerian striker eyes momentum as Galatasaray gears up for Liverpool in UEFA round of 16 clash

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen expressed confidence that the Turkish champions will enter their UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash against Liverpool with strong momentum after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Besiktas in the Istanbul derby.

Osimhen scored the decisive first-half header, his 11th league goal of the season, ending Besiktas’ 18-match unbeaten streak and extending Galatasaray’s lead over Fenerbahce to seven points in the Super Lig.

The Nigerian forward has now contributed goals or assists in eight consecutive league appearances, equalling the longest streak of his professional career, first set during his spell at Napoli in 2023.

“It’s beautiful to play this type of team in the Champions League. We are one of the best teams, and we will carry this momentum into the next game and give everything,” Osimhen said in a statement via Galatasaray’s YouTube page. He highlighted the impact of home support, adding that the fans’ backing will give his side an edge.

The 27-year-old has been pivotal for Galatasaray in the Champions League this season, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in eight matches.

He also netted the winner in Galatasaray’s 1-0 group-stage victory over Liverpool, reinforcing his reputation as a key performer on Europe’s biggest stage.

Osimhen’s remarks come amid reports that FC Barcelona are monitoring his situation as a potential signing if Robert Lewandowski departs this summer.

His pace, power and finishing skills are cited as ideal fits for Barcelona’s current attack.

Other European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Chelsea, are also reportedly keeping tabs on the Nigerian forward.
