Ondo woman and community members foil child theft, rescuing a three-year-old while suspects are arrested by police

The Ondo State Police Command says a woman helped foil a suspected child theft attempt after community members intercepted two suspects in Ogbagi Akoko.

The incident, reported on March 22, followed a tip-off from Mrs Olanireti ‘F’, who had sent her three-year-old son, Alex Ayobami ‘M’, to his grandmother. A resident noticed suspicious activity and raised the alarm.

The suspects, identified as Adefarati Idowu ‘M’ and Adepoju Babatunde ‘M’, attempted to flee on an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle with the child.

The child’s grandmother, Mrs Olawale ‘F’, held onto the motorcycle while residents blocked the suspects, allowing police to apprehend them.

“The child was successfully rescued unhurt,” the command said, highlighting the joint efforts of the community and law enforcement.

The case has been transferred to the police headquarters for a thorough investigation, with efforts ongoing to determine if a wider criminal network was involved.

Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal commended the community’s vigilance, stressing that the incident underscores the importance of citizen participation in security.

The police advised parents and guardians to remain alert and encouraged the public to report suspicious activity. They reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
