Former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has sparked widespread debate in football circles after claiming that Bayern winger Michael Olise is a better player than Barcelona teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Bastian Schweinsteiger made the controversial remarks while responding to growing global admiration for Lamine Yamal, who has been widely hailed as one of the most exciting young talents in world football following his rapid rise at Barcelona.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup winner argued that comparisons between the two players have been overstated, insisting that Michael Olise offers a more complete and consistent level of performance at the highest stage.

“I don’t understand how anyone says Yamal is better than Olise,” Bastian Schweinsteiger said, adding that he believes the Bayern winger possesses superior overall quality.

The Olise vs Lamine Yamal debate intensified further when Schweinsteiger criticised what he described as an attempt to prematurely label Yamal as the successor to Lionel Messi, calling the narrative exaggerated and, in his words, “getting childish.”

The former midfielder also questioned the objectivity of some praise directed at the Barcelona youngster, suggesting that external narratives may be influencing public perception of his performances.

In contrast, Schweinsteiger praised Michael Olise for his consistency in the Bundesliga, highlighting the winger’s technical skill, creativity and influence in Bayern Munich’s attacking play this season.

Michael Olise has been one of Bayern’s standout performers, earning acclaim for his vision, dribbling ability and decisive contributions in key matches.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu surprised his wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, with flowers before sharing a kiss with her at the opening ceremony of the 26th Annual National Women’s Conference in Lagos on Tuesday.

The event was organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) under the theme, “Anchored in Purpose: Be the Blueprint.”

Sanwo-Olu presented the flowers to his wife during his speech at the conference, which brings together women and leaders for discussions and activities focused on women’s empowerment and leadership.

“On behalf of COWLSO and everything that is decent, we want to appreciate you, we want to honour you,” the governor said.

The couple subsequently shared a kiss as Nigerian singer 2Baba’s song, “African Queen”, played at the event.

The conference aims to inspire women, empower leaders and promote a purposeful future through discussions and activities centred on women’s development.
