A commercial motorcyclist was allegedly stabbed to death by a levy collector in Ogun over a N100 ticket, sparking protests and transport disruption

Tensions escalated in parts of Ogun State after a commercial motorcyclist was allegedly stabbed to death by a member of a transport union tax collection group, commonly called agberos, following an argument over a N100 ticket.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night in Ijoko, according to local reports. Sources said the disagreement between the deceased and levy collectors escalated into a violent confrontation. One other person was reportedly stabbed during the altercation but survived.

A motorcyclist who identified himself as Rasheed told reporters, “They were fighting over a N100 ticket. It started as a small argument before it escalated.

The person who was killed is one of the motorcyclists from Nasarawa. His colleagues are now confronting agberos in Lambe, Ijoko and parts of Akute.”

Another rider, Ganiyu, confirmed the fatal stabbing and said tensions remained high, causing many commercial motorcyclists to refrain from work.

“Some riders have refused to work since then, which is why there are fewer commercial motorcyclists around today. The police are aware and arrested some people during another confrontation,” he said.

A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, verified the stabbing occurred in Ijoko, within the Agbado-Sango axis, and clarified that protests in Lambe and Akute followed the incident.

The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, was yet to respond to enquiries at the time of filing.

Violent clashes between commercial motorcyclists and levy collectors are not new in Ogun State. Similar confrontations over ticket fees in 2023, notably at Akute Bus Stop and Alagbole in Ifo Local Government Area, previously led to property damage, shop closures, and residents fleeing for safety.

The latest incident underscores ongoing friction between riders and levy collectors over allegations of harassment and extortion.
