OceanHub Africa and The Coca-Cola Foundation launch a $120,000 pan-African challenge to fund innovative solutions addressing plastic waste and promoting sustainable livelihoods

OceanHub Africa (OHA), in collaboration with The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF), has announced a $120,000 pan-African challenge targeting innovative solutions to tackle plastic waste.

The initiative, Call for Bold Ideas in Plastic Circularity, seeks science-driven concepts from scientists, startups, and innovators across Africa that can scale continent-wide and create measurable impact.

The challenge aims to:

* Provide up to $120,000 in funding to selected projects for initial scaling.
* Offer technical support, mentorship, and guidance toward commercialization.
* Facilitate connections to corporate partners and market entry networks.
* Achieve tangible goals, including recycling 490 tons of plastic and creating over 150 sustainable livelihoods in urban and coastal communities.

Herland Cerveaux, Managing Director of OceanHub Africa, said, “This partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation will provide vital resources and networks to help innovators achieve market readiness and impact.”

Jeff Denby of The Coca-Cola Foundation emphasized empowering local solutions for both environmental preservation and economic inclusion.

Africa faces a growing plastic waste crisis, with projections indicating solid waste will exceed 200 million tons annually by 2030.

This initiative targets early-stage solutions, supporting ideas that can transition from research to market-ready ventures.
