Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori mourns former Deputy Governor Benjamin Elue, describing his death at 85 as a painful loss to the state and Nigeria

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Deputy Governor, Benjamin Elue, describing his passing as a painful loss to Delta State and the nation.

Chief Elue died at the age of 85.

In a condolence message issued on Saturday in Asaba by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor said the state received news of the elder statesman’s demise with shock and sadness, while also expressing gratitude to God for what he described as a fulfilled life devoted to public service.

Oborevwori described the late former deputy governor as a loyal patriot, seasoned administrator and committed political figure whose contributions to the growth and stability of Delta State remain indelible.

According to the governor, Elue played a significant role in strengthening governance during his tenure as deputy governor to former governor James Ibori between 1999 and 2007 — a period regarded as crucial to consolidating democratic rule in the early years of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

He noted that the late politician was widely respected for his humility, dedication to duty and unwavering loyalty to the administration he served, adding that his calm disposition and wisdom fostered unity and stability across the state.

“Chief Benjamin Elue was not only a distinguished politician but also a renowned teacher who devoted his life to mentoring younger generations,” the governor stated.

Oborevwori further described the deceased as a man of honour and integrity whose service to Delta State earned him widespread respect across political divides.

He also acknowledged Elue’s steadfast commitment to peace and unity, stressing that his contributions to the development of the state would remain unforgettable.

The governor extended condolences to the Elue family, the people of Aniocha North Local Government Area, Delta North Senatorial District and the entire state, praying for the peaceful repose of the late elder statesman and divine comfort for those he left behind.
