Obasanjo rejects bandit talks, urging decisive action and foreign help as insecurity escalates across Nigeria

According to remarks delivered in Jos on Friday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has firmly stated that Obasanjo rejects bandit talks, insisting that Nigeria must take a tougher approach to its worsening security crisis.

Speaking at the Plateau State Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival, he condemned ongoing negotiations with armed groups and urged the Federal Government to halt what he described as a pattern of apologies and concessions.

Obasanjo’s sharp intervention comes amid a fresh wave of violence across northern communities. In recent weeks, hundreds of schoolchildren, teachers, farmers, and worshippers have been abducted in Niger, Kebbi, Kano, and Kwara States, deepening fears over the growing reach of bandit groups.

The recent seizure of more than three hundred students and several teachers from St Mary’s Catholic School in Niger State added new urgency to the national alarm.

The former President argued that Nigerians have every right to seek international intervention if the state fails to provide protection.

His comments reflect rising public frustration as communities continue to suffer deadly attacks and mass kidnappings with little sign of relief.

Obasanjo highlighted the availability of modern technology, stressing that Nigeria now possesses surveillance and strike capabilities far superior to what existed during his time in office.

He said the country has the means to identify and take out terrorists using tools such as drones, questioning why such capacity is not being fully deployed.

He criticised the idea of negotiating with armed criminals, calling instead for decisive, coordinated, and professionally executed action against violent groups.

According to him, a strong and confident response is essential if the country is to restore stability and assure citizens of their safety.
