NYSC sanctions Sokoto corps members as 24 members face penalties including service extension and repeat year for absenteeism and abscondment

The National Youth Service Corps has sanctioned 24 corps members serving in Sokoto State for offences including absenteeism and abscondment, the Sokoto State Coordinator, Usman Yakubu Yaro, has confirmed.

Yaro made the disclosure during the passing-out ceremony of the 2025 Batch A, Stream I corps members held in Sokoto, where the disciplinary measures were announced alongside commendations for outstanding participants.

The NYSC sanctions Sokoto corps members followed a review of infractions committed during the service year. According to Yaro, eight corps members will be required to repeat their service year, while 16 others will have their service extended as a result of various violations.

He reiterated that the scheme maintains a strict stance on discipline, stressing that acts of truancy and non-compliance will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The enforcement, he noted, is intended to uphold the integrity and standards of the national service programme.

Despite the disciplinary actions, Yaro praised the majority of corps members who successfully completed their assignments.

He highlighted the recognition of two individuals who received the Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Award for their contributions to community development initiatives in Sokoto State.

The coordinator also addressed the challenges facing graduates in the labour market, urging corps members to leverage the skills acquired during their service year.

He encouraged them to remain responsible representatives of the scheme as they transition into post-service life.

Yaro commended Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu for consistent support to the NYSC programme, particularly in ensuring the timely payment of allowances.

He also acknowledged the backing of the Sultan of Sokoto for youth-focused initiatives that support development across the state.

The ceremony marked the conclusion of the service year for the batch, with officials reinforcing the importance of discipline, patriotism and commitment to national service among corps members.
