Super Eagles goalkeeper resumes his career at the South African club as he targets regular football and a return to Nigeria’s national team

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has completed his return to Chippa United, five months after leaving the South African club, as he looks to revive his club career and regain his place in Nigeria’s national team.

The Nwabali returns to Chippa United move was confirmed by the Premier Soccer League side on Sunday through its official social media platforms, with the club welcoming the 30-year-old goalkeeper back after several months away from competitive football.

In a brief announcement, Chippa United expressed delight at Nwabali’s return and wished him success as preparations begin for the 2026/27 season.

Nwabali had departed the club in February 2026 and remained without regular club football during the intervening months, a period that affected both his match fitness and his standing with the Super Eagles.

The lack of consistent playing time ultimately cost the goalkeeper his place in Nigeria’s national team, with selectors opting for players enjoying regular club action.

His return to Chippa United offers an important opportunity to rebuild momentum at club level and strengthen his case for a recall ahead of Nigeria’s forthcoming international fixtures.

Nwabali first joined Chippa United in 2022 and established himself as one of the club’s most reliable performers before earning widespread recognition on the international stage.

His reputation soared during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where his composed displays between the posts helped Nigeria reach the final.

The Super Eagles finished runners-up after losing to hosts Côte d’Ivoire, but Nwabali emerged as one of the tournament’s standout goalkeepers and became a fan favourite.

Following his impressive AFCON performances, the shot-stopper attracted growing attention and cemented his status as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper for a period.

However, his prolonged absence from club football disrupted that progress, underlining the importance of regular competitive action for players seeking to maintain international selection.

As the new season approaches, Nwabali’s immediate priority will be securing the starting role at Chippa United, improving his match sharpness and delivering the consistent performances that previously earned him recognition both in South Africa and with the Super Eagles.
