Nuno Espirito Santo starts West Ham reign with a 1-1 draw at Everton as Jarrod Bowen’s deflected strike cancels out Michael Keane’s opener

Nuno Espirito Santo West Ham debut ended in a 1-1 draw at Everton, as Jarrod Bowen’s second-half strike rescued a point in a scrappy Premier League clash on Monday night.

Appointed just 48 hours earlier to replace the sacked Graham Potter, Nuno had limited time to prepare but saw his side show renewed fight at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The former Nottingham Forest boss watched as Michael Keane headed Everton into an 18th-minute lead following yet another poorly defended set-piece by the Hammers.

West Ham’s familiar frailties resurfaced when keeper Alphonse Areola flapped at a corner, allowing James Garner to recycle possession and cross for Keane, who powered home from 12 yards.

But Nuno’s men responded in the second half, growing in confidence and ultimately grabbing a deserved equaliser through Bowen, whose shot deflected off Keane and beyond Jordan Pickford in the 65th minute.

It was only West Ham’s second point in seven matches this season—a minor yet much-needed improvement under their new manager, who will have taken heart from a spirited performance after just two training sessions in charge.

The east London side remain second from bottom with four points from six games, but Nuno brings valuable top-flight survival experience, having previously kept Wolves and Forest in the Premier League.

Everton, ironically managed by former West Ham boss David Moyes, had multiple chances to extend their lead.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall went close with a header, and Jake O’Brien blazed over from a good position.

But West Ham slowly asserted control, with Crysencio Summerville drawing a sharp save from Pickford before El Hadji Malick Diouf delivered the cross that led to Bowen’s leveller.

The goal quietened earlier chants of *“sack the board”* from frustrated Hammers supporters, and it gave Nuno a solid foundation to build upon ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.
