Northern Youth Frontiers slam Amnesty International over ‘misleading’ security reports, accusing it of fueling unrest and undermining national efforts

The group, a coalition of young Nigerians from the northern region, issued a fiery statement on Friday accusing the global human rights organisation of misrepresenting facts and downplaying the efforts of Nigerian security forces.

Sama Musa, National Coordinator of the Northern Youth Frontiers, said Amnesty International’s recent publications on insecurity were “careless, mischievous, and inciteful.

He warned that such reporting not only erodes public trust but could also demoralise military personnel and embolden criminal elements.

“Their reports present a distorted picture of Nigeria’s security efforts,” Musa said. “These publications ignore the sacrifices of our security forces and sensationalise incidents to draw negative global attention.”

Northern Youth Frontiers slam Amnesty International particularly for its recent report that cited at least 65 deaths in a week due to attacks in Katsina and Plateau states.

While acknowledging the severity of the incidents, the group argued that Amnesty’s portrayal lacked balance and failed to consider government interventions or the complexity of the conflict.

“Amnesty International’s approach prioritises headlines over honesty,” Musa said. “Such one-sided narratives threaten our fragile unity and national morale.”

The coalition warned that repeated publication of “agenda-driven” reports could fuel public anger, widen divisions, and even undermine national security.

They urged the Federal Government to investigate Amnesty International’s activities in Nigeria and consider legal restrictions if findings suggest any deliberate sabotage.

“If an organisation continually misleads the public and incites unrest, it must be held accountable,” Musa added.

In response to growing concern over misinformation, the group also called for public awareness campaigns to better inform citizens about ongoing security efforts and the need to support law enforcement.

“Our troops risk their lives daily. They deserve encouragement, not vilification,” Musa stated.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International Nigeria had on the same day released a report accusing Nigerian authorities of failing to protect lives and property, citing a sharp increase in attacks, killings, and abductions across the country.
