NNPC CNG buses handed over to Presidential Initiative as part of Tinubu’s energy transition agenda, promoting cheaper, cleaner transportation in Nigeria

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd has handed over 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas-powered vehicles, known as NNPC CNG buses, to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, marking a major milestone in the country’s push for affordable and cleaner transportation.

The brief handover ceremony, held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja on Monday, saw the Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Ojulari, reaffirm NNPC Ltd’s support for the Federal Government’s energy transition and gas utilisation agenda.

“This move aligns with NNPC Ltd’s ongoing efforts to promote CNG as a cleaner, cheaper, and sustainable fuel alternative,” Ojulari said in a statement issued by the company.

He added that the company has made notable progress in gas supply, infrastructure development, distribution, and the establishment of retail outlets.

“I am proud that NNPC Ltd is playing a pivotal role in driving the Federal Government’s gas agenda towards energy transition,” he stated.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, praised the development, describing the NNPC CNG buses not merely as transport assets but as vital tools for economic relief, social equity, and environmental sustainability.

“They signal a future where the ordinary Nigerian can commute safely, affordably, and efficiently,” he noted.

The Minister emphasised that the initiative is a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It is a deliberate effort to reduce transportation costs, limit dependency on petrol, and maximise Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources for the benefit of the public.

Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Ltd, Mumuni Dagazau, highlighted the long-term value of adopting CNG, saying it reduces reliance on petrol and diesel, saves costs, and stimulates local gas sector growth.

Also speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, said the initiative aligns with the organisation’s vision of advancing a future that supports people, communities, and environmental goals.

Programme Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, commended NNPC Ltd for its consistent backing. He described the company as a dependable partner since the inception of the project.
