Describing Kanu’s continued detention as unjust, Mbah said releasing him is not only overdue but also the right and necessary thing to do.

Speaking during a question-and-answer session at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Enugu on Monday, Governor Mbah revealed that his very first meeting with President Bola Tinubu after assuming office focused on Kanu’s situation.

My first visit to the President was about Nnamdi Kanu. I believe that the right thing to do is to release him.

Hopefully, that will be done soon,” Mbah said, responding to a participant who praised his continued advocacy for Kanu’s freedom.

The Governor went further to connect Kanu’s detention with regional peace and stability. He cited the now-ended Monday sit-at-home order that had crippled social and economic activities in Enugu and across the Southeast.

“We met a situation where people were compelled to stay at home every Monday. Now, people trade in Ogbete and other markets in peace on Mondays Monday sit-at-home has ended in Enugu, as you can see. You can also move around and investigate,” he told the audience of legal professionals.

Kanu is currently on trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja, facing terrorism-related charges which he has consistently denied.

His detention has stirred tension, protests, and political demands, particularly from leaders in the Southeast.

Governor Mbah also took the opportunity to highlight the broader strategies his administration has put in place to restore normalcy, boost development, and unlock economic opportunities for Enugu residents.

He credited his administration’s bold reforms for breaking barriers and restoring public confidence.

With a firm and unapologetic tone, the Enugu State Governor once again placed himself at the forefront of a growing movement demanding justice, reconciliation, and national healing.
