Newcastle stun Man United with a dramatic 2–1 win at St James’ Park as William Osula’s late goal ends Michael Carrick’s unbeaten run

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe guided his side to a dramatic 2–1 victory over Manchester United on Wednesday night at St James’ Park, as substitute William Osula struck a stunning stoppage-time winner to end caretaker boss Michael Carrick’s impressive unbeaten run.

Carrick had steered United through a seven-match unbeaten streak since assuming temporary charge earlier this year, recording six wins and a draw. That momentum, however, was abruptly halted by Newcastle’s late surge in a gripping Premier League contest.

The match delivered high drama from the opening half, culminating in a chaotic sequence deep into stoppage time before the break.

Newcastle moved ahead when Anthony Gordon calmly converted from the penalty spot after Bruno Fernandes was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the area.

Manchester United responded almost immediately. Minutes later, Fernandes redeemed himself by delivering a precise free-kick cross that Casemiro met with a powerful header to level the score before half-time.

The momentum appeared to swing in United’s favour when Newcastle were reduced to 10 men after Jacob Ramsey received his second yellow card during the same first-half stoppage period.

With the numerical advantage, Carrick’s side dominated possession after the interval and pressed persistently for a winner.

Young defender Leny Yoro came closest when his towering header forced an outstanding save from goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, while Fernandes narrowly missed the target as United intensified their attacking pressure.

Howe attempted to reshape the contest at half-time, introducing Joe Willock in place of Harvey Barnes to inject fresh energy into midfield. Manchester United responded with attacking substitutions, bringing on Amad Diallo and Joshua Zirkzee.

As stoppage time approached and the match appeared destined to end in a draw, Newcastle produced a decisive and electrifying moment.

Osula, introduced late in the contest, chased down a long ball during a swift counterattack, surged beyond the United defence and cut inside before curling a superb left-footed strike into the far corner beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
