NAFDAC seizes over 10,000 cartons of unregistered tomato paste and cosmetics in Lagos Trade Fair market crackdown, citing public health risks

The NAFDAC seizure in Lagos has taken over 10,000 cartons of unregistered tomato paste and cosmetic products off the shelves following a five-day operation at the cosmetics section of Lagos Trade Fair market.

Dr Martins Iluyomade, Director of Investigation and Enforcement at the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), said on Tuesday that the raid targeted unregistered and potentially harmful goods, including creams, soaps, body sprays, air fresheners, toothpaste, and processed foods.

“We cannot guarantee the safety of these products because they have not undergone any regulatory scrutiny,” Iluyomade said, warning that deaths from substandard goods could exceed those caused by Boko Haram.

He revealed that a newly inaugurated multi-agency task force and a strengthened partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service were improving the fight against unsafe and falsified products.

NAFDAC urged Nigerians to use its decentralised registration system to verify products and assured its commitment to protecting public health by eliminating unregistered, substandard, and expired items from circulation.
