Mourinho warns Real Madrid players that trust and discipline are non-negotiable as he begins his second spell at the Bernabeu

Jose Mourinho has warned Real Madrid players against betraying his trust, telling the squad that discipline, honesty and mutual respect will be central to his approach following his return to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2026.

The Portuguese manager made the remarks during an appearance on the Bet It Drives Show, as he outlined the expectations he has set for his players after returning to Real Madrid 13 years after his previous spell in charge.

Mourinho, who returned to the Bernabeu this summer, said his warning about betrayal was strictly related to football and the relationship between a manager and his players.

“When I say don’t betray me, of course, I’m speaking about football. Don’t betray me, and I’ll always be there for you,” Mourinho said, according to ESPN.

For Mourinho, trust is closely linked to discipline. He explained that certain standards would apply to every player, regardless of status or reputation within the squad.

“There are rules that are not negotiable,” he said.

The manager used punctuality as an example, making it clear that established team standards would apply equally to senior players and younger members of the squad.

“If you report at 9am, it’s 9am for everybody. If you arrive at 9.15, even if you’re a superstar, you just can’t,” Mourinho said.

He added that he would not tolerate players ignoring agreed standards, while also stressing that discipline would not prevent footballers from expressing themselves on the pitch.

“I don’t accept it,” Mourinho said. “But another thing is giving them freedom to express themselves.”

The comments underline the balance Mourinho intends to strike between strict standards and individual freedom as he begins another chapter at one of European football’s most prominent clubs.

His return to Real Madrid has also revived memories of his first spell at the club, which began in 2010. Mourinho previously spent three seasons at the Bernabeu before leaving in 2013.

During that period, he guided Real Madrid to the LaLiga title in the 2011/12 season, while also winning the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.

His latest appointment therefore represents a significant return to familiar surroundings, but with a new squad and a different footballing landscape.

Mourinho’s message to the players suggests that he intends to establish clear expectations from the outset, with trust between the manager and his squad forming a crucial part of his philosophy.

While the manager has emphasised discipline, his comments also indicate that he wants players to retain the freedom to make decisions and express themselves once they cross the white line.

For Real Madrid, the challenge will be to translate those principles into performances as Mourinho begins his latest attempt to compete for major domestic and European honours.
