Mourinho unbeaten season comment: Benfica boss says he would prefer winning the title over going unbeaten after a trophyless campaign

José Mourinho has admitted he would rather win a league title than complete a season unbeaten, despite achieving the rare feat with SL Benfica.

The Benfica manager said the unbeaten record is an impressive milestone, but insisted it holds little value without a trophy to match it.

“The unbeatable thing is a great thing,” Mourinho said, reflecting on the campaign.

“It’s the first time in my career. Even winning eight championships, I never did it invincible.”

“I would change that for the title with two or three defeats, no doubts about that,” he added.

The comment came after Benfica ended their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Estoril, thanks to goals from Richard Ríos, Alexander Bah and Rafa.

Despite finishing strongly, the club’s inability to secure major European qualification added a mixed tone to an otherwise solid domestic run.
