Michael Kayode Italy debut ended hopes of a Nigeria switch after the Brentford defender scored in Italy’s 4-1 Nations League win over Türkiye

Michael Kayode, the Brentford defender eligible for Nigeria through his parentage, made his senior Italy debut and scored in a 4-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Türkiye on Monday, a competitive appearance that has effectively ended the possibility of his switching his international allegiance to the Super Eagles.

Kayode, born in Borgomanero, Italy, started at right-back for Roberto Mancini’s side at the Atatürk Spor Kompleksi Matlı Stadium as Italy recovered from their opening 2-0 defeat by Belgium.

The 22-year-old marked his first senior appearance with a goal in the 27th minute, becoming the latest young player to make an immediate impression during Mancini’s return to the Italy dugout.

Alessandro Bastoni opened the scoring in the ninth minute before Davide Frattesi doubled Italy’s advantage 13 minutes later.

Kayode then made it 3-0 before half-time, while Francesco Pio Esposito added Italy’s fourth shortly after the restart.

Türkiye’s Barış Alper Yılmaz scored Italy’s only concession in the 4-1 victory.

Kayode’s goal came after he had already contributed to the build-up for Italy’s second. The Brentford full-back forced a save before capitalising on a similar move to score himself.

“I didn’t expect my debut to go like this, so I am really happy,” Kayode told RAI Sport after the match.

The defender had previously represented Italy at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level, but his senior debut had remained significant for both Italy and Nigeria because of his dual eligibility.

Nigeria had reportedly made efforts to persuade Kayode to commit his international future to the Super Eagles.

His decision to continue with Italy has now been reinforced by his competitive senior appearance.

Under FIFA’s regulations governing eligibility and changes of association, players who have represented one association in an official senior international competition can only switch in specific circumstances.

FIFA’s current guidance confirms that change-of-association requests are handled through the Football Tribunal and are subject to defined regulatory conditions.

The relevant rules include an age condition for certain players seeking a change of association.

FIFA’s regulations state that, for one of the applicable routes, a player must not have turned 21 by the time of his last official appearance for the current association.

Kayode is already 22, meaning the route described in the original report is not available to him.

His appearance for Italy in the Nations League therefore represents a decisive moment in his international career.

FIFA also makes clear that a player who has participated in an official competition is generally tied to that association unless one of the specified exceptions for a change of association applies.

The development will be a significant one for Nigeria, which had previously viewed the versatile full-back as a potential option for the national team.

For Kayode, however, the decision has been accompanied by an emphatic start to his Italy career.

His goal helped Italy recover from their defeat by Belgium and move back into contention in Nations League Group A1.

Italy will now face France in their next Nations League fixture, with Kayode having given Mancini another encouraging option at right-back after an impressive first appearance.
