Co-hosts Mexico secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, after a composed 2-0 victory over Ecuador, confirming their progression as one of seven nations already through to the knockout stage of the tournament.

The match, played under the guidance of head coach Javier Aguirre, saw Mexico produce a disciplined first-half performance that proved decisive in sealing qualification. The result also strengthens Mexico’s standing as one of the more stable co-hosts in the competition.

Mexico took control early in the encounter, with Julián Quiñones opening the scoring before Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead, both goals coming in the first half to give the hosts a comfortable advantage.

Ecuador’s challenge unravelled late in the match after Piero Hincapié was sent off deep into stoppage time, reducing the South American side to ten men and ending any hopes of a late comeback.

The victory makes Mexico the second co-host nation to progress to the knockout stage, following Canada, who had earlier secured qualification after eliminating South Africa.

Mexico will now await the winner of the England versus DR Congo fixture as they prepare for their Round of 16 clash.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Brazil, Norway, Paraguay, France and Morocco have also confirmed their places in the last 16, underlining a competitive and widely balanced group stage so far.
