Lionel Messi has been diagnosed with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, raising fresh concerns over his fitness ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

His club, Inter Miami CF, confirmed the development on Monday after the Argentine captain limped off during their dramatic 6-4 Major League Soccer victory over Philadelphia Union on Sunday.

Messi, 38, appeared to be in discomfort in the 73rd minute, clutching the back of his left leg before signalling for a substitution.

Although he was able to walk off the pitch, he immediately headed to the dressing room, sparking concern among supporters and the Argentine national team.

In a statement, Inter Miami said further medical assessments indicated an “overload associated with muscle fatigue” in his left hamstring, adding that his recovery timeline will depend on his clinical progress.

“The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress,” the club stated.

The update leaves uncertainty over Messi’s availability for the tournament, which begins on June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Argentina open their World Cup defence five days later against Algeria in Kansas City, increasing concern over his potential involvement in the early stages.

Messi has been carefully managed throughout his time in Major League Soccer since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, with periodic rest periods during a congested schedule.

Although he has not officially confirmed his participation, he is widely expected to lead Argentina at what could be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.
