Mbappe Explains France Loss to Spain after the World Cup semi-final defeat, blaming tactical errors and failure to follow the team’s plan

France captain Kylian Mbappe has blamed tactical mistakes and a failure to follow the team’s planned approach for Les Bleus’ 2-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final.

France’s hopes of reaching the final ended at Dallas Stadium after goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro secured a deserved victory for Spain.

Spain took control of the match after earning an early penalty in the first half, which Oyarzabal confidently converted before Porro added a second goal after the break to seal Spain’s place in the final.

Speaking after the defeat, Mbappe said France failed to execute the tactical instructions required to overcome a technically strong Spain side.

“Right from the start, we were pressing three against two… and we messed up there. Against Spain, you have to press man for man,” Mbappe said.

The France captain admitted that the team’s inability to follow its strategy proved costly in a crucial World Cup knockout match.

“We didn’t activate the game plan. When you don’t do what you’re supposed to do in a World Cup semifinal, you don’t win,” he added.

Mbappe said the players had fallen short of the level required to achieve their ambition of reaching the World Cup final.

“We did not do what it takes to reach the dream, to reach the World Cup final,” he said.

The defeat brought an end to France’s tournament campaign and marked a disappointing conclusion to Didier Deschamps’ final World Cup appearance as head coach. Deschamps had already announced that he would leave his role after the competition.

Spain’s victory continued their impressive run in the tournament, with La Roja advancing to the final after another disciplined performance.

The result also strengthened their reputation as one of the most consistent teams in international football.
