Martinez explains Ronaldo’s playing time against Nigeria, saying his substitution plan influenced the decision despite missed chances

Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, has explained why captain Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the pitch for more than an hour despite missing several chances in Portugal’s 2-1 friendly victory over Nigeria.

The Portugal coach said his decision to keep Ronaldo involved was part of a planned substitution strategy rather than a reaction to the forward’s performance.

Ronaldo, 41, started the match in Leiria on Wednesday night but struggled to convert his opportunities before being replaced by Gonçalo Ramos in the 65th minute.

The veteran forward had a difficult outing in front of goal as Portugal secured a narrow win ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Speaking on the decision, Martinez said the playing time had already been determined before the match.

“Diogo Costa had a 90-minute plan, Cristiano 60. Nuno Mendes was going to have 30 and 45 minutes for Vitinha and João Neves,” Martinez said.

The Portuguese coach praised his players for maintaining discipline and focus throughout the encounter.

“I am very pleased with the attitude and focus of all the players,” he added.

Martinez said the team’s ability to manage changes while maintaining balance was a positive sign ahead of the World Cup.

Ronaldo will now look to regain his scoring form when Portugal begin their tournament campaign against DR Congo next Wednesday.
