Maduka Okoye faces fresh expectations at Udinese as former goalkeeper Gigi Turci highlights areas the Nigerian must improve

Former Udinese goalkeeper Gigi Turci has challenged Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to raise his standards ahead of the new Serie A season, while acknowledging the Nigerian’s impressive progress since becoming the club’s first-choice option.

Okoye recently returned for pre-season training with Udinese after a strong 2025/26 campaign in which he produced several decisive saves and recorded 10 clean sheets to help the club achieve important results in Italy’s top flight.

Despite the goalkeeper’s growing influence, Turci believes Okoye still has aspects of his game that require improvement, particularly in the technical side of goalkeeping.

Speaking to Messaggero Veneto, the former Udinese shot-stopper praised the Nigerian’s athletic qualities but said more refinement would be needed for him to reach the next level.

“He’s physically impressive, but his technique isn’t complete. Without Sava and Nunziante behind him, we need a second,” Turci said.

Turci also stressed that Okoye now has the responsibility of proving he can consistently perform at the highest level after earning the trust of the Serie A club.

“Now he has to prove himself,” he added.

The comments come as Okoye prepares for another demanding season in Italy, where expectations have increased following his improved performances and growing reputation.

Okoye’s future will depend largely on how he responds to increased competition and whether he can continue improving key areas of his game while maintaining the confidence that made him Udinese’s preferred goalkeeper.

Since joining the club, Okoye has developed steadily, gaining experience in Serie A and becoming a more reliable presence between the posts. His performances have also kept him in contention for a stronger role with Nigeria’s national team.

While Turci’s remarks highlight areas for development, they also reflect the standards expected of a goalkeeper who has established himself at a major European club.

Okoye will have the chance to answer the assessment through his performances when Udinese begin their 2026/27 Serie A campaign.
